Inspired by Disney’s Moana and Bobby Duke Arts on YouTube, my first major project was making Maui’s hook. The sculpture is made from 2” x 4” pine boards laminated together and carved into the iconic shape of Maui’s hook.
The stand was originally a rushed afterthought that was made from MDF sheets and worked for a short period of time before it tipped and ended up breaking the hook in multiple places. This was an important lesson in design and engineering and prompted me to make an updated version of my beloved hook's home.
The new iteration is a combination of wood, insulation foam, and plaster made to imitate stone. It also illuminates a warm glow around the hook and the logo from Disney’s Moana to give the hook the setting it deserves. This was my first experience with the laser cutter and began to get more and more proficient with time.
